Not surprisingly the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer course is one of the most popular PADI specialties there is. It’s no wonder it’s so popular, with the sheer volume of subjects underwater just waiting to be photographed. It is quite a skill to master however, and it isn’t just a case of packing up a camera and taking it on a dive and snapping away — although this can also be a lot of fun!
There are actually two courses to choose from with underwater photography — both equally as important for their different techniques and information that you will learn. The PADI Underwater Photographer course will teach you the traditional aspects of photography and has its bases in the original film photography techniques. The PADI Digital Underwater Photographer course will teach you the basics with modern digital equipment whether you are using a point and shoot camera or a D-SLR with or without strobes.
You will learn how to expose correctly for the lighting underwater with either natural or artificial light, how to avoid backscatter and how to correctly white balance your pictures. You will also learn about how to compose and set up your shots whilst maintaining a safe diving distance from fragile corals and marine life.
In addition from the PADI Underwater Digital Photographer course you will learn how to choose the right underwater camera system for you, the PADI SEA method for getting great shots quickly and the primary principles for good underwater photos.
