We’re proud to announce our second annual conservation week from 6-11 August. For a single week, we will relentlessly focus all of our diving and resort activities on enhancing the ocean environment and reducing our impact on it.
My scuba diving adventure started when I first went to Mexico and completed my AOW and Rescue courses, and, not quite ready to go home, I came to Sabah where I did my Divemaster course. Shortly after, it followed by the PADI Instructor course.
Regular visitors to the rig will often look into the distance and see communities of people who live on the sandbanks around the rig. Commonly known as ‘sea gypsies’, or ‘Bajau Laut’, these communities are found living in stilt huts and boats, known as ‘lepa lepa’, right across the Celebes Sea (and within Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Myanmar – although many are deemed to be stateless). I have always loved the ocean and the marine life in it. Back then, I’d always pick a tropical island as my holiday destination so that I could go and snorkel to see turtles and cool fishes! However, it took me a few years before I eventually did my first ever dive.
We had a great start to the year with conducting plenty of PADI Open Water Courses and other skill enhancing courses. Hopefully our newly certified divers will not only discover a new passion for the underwater but at the same time develop a love for ocean conservation too.
