A Local’s Guide to Sipadan Island: History, People, and Must-See Dive Sites

Sipadan Dive Site
Sipadan Island’s fascinating history traces back to its unique geological formation. As Malaysia’s only oceanic island, it was formed by centuries of coral growth atop an extinct volcanic cone. Unlike continental islands, Sipadan rises 600 metres from the seabed, creating dramatic underwater landscapes. Sipadan was relatively unknown within the international diving community until the 1980s, when famed underwater explorer and filmmaker Jacques-Yves Cousteau discovered the island. Mesmerised by its beauty, he compared Sipadan to an unspoiled work of art from a different time. As Cousteau puts it, “I have seen other places like Sipadan 45 years ago, but now no more. Now we have found an untouched piece of art.” Since then, Sipadan has drawn in countless numbers of divers, all looking for a new aquatic adventure. But over the years, concerns about environmental degradation have led to its designation as a protected marine park in 2004, with all resorts removed to preserve its pristine ecosystem.  This protection status is vital in safeguarding the island’s delicate marine life and coral reefs, ensuring it remains a top diving destination while maintaining ecological balance. All of which have helped Sipadan to retain its raw beauty, offering visitors a glimpse into an underwater paradise untouched by excessive human interference.

Origins of Sipadan Island

As for its unique name, some believe that Pulau (Island in Malay / Indonesian) Sipadan was named Pulau Sempadan – or border island. Given Sipadan’s proximity to Indonesia and Malaysia, this is quite believable. Another school of thought attributes the island’s name to the local Siparan people (members of the Bajau ethnicity) who travelled to Sipadan to collect turtle eggs. This claim has some credibility, as Sipadan is often referred to as Siparan in the Bajau language.
